Hoppen selected for Omaha sports hall of fame

Benson 1982 graduate Dave Hoppen will enter the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame on April 21.

The University of Nebraska’s career scoring leader, Hoppen was a two-time All-Nebraska center for the Bunnies. The 6-foot-11 Hoppen played in the 1983 U.S. Olympic Festival and the 1985 World University Games and his six-season NBA career included stints with five teams. Hoppen is enshrined in the Nebraska Basketball and Nebraska High School Sports Halls of Fame.

Also to be inducted is former Benson resident Jack Payne, a longtime Omaha sportscaster and the public address announcer for the College World Series for 37 years and the state high school track meet for 27 years.
